2008 was the year of economic crisis, with attention focused on the possible impact of recessions or downturns in the developed world. It is clear, however, that the global aftershocks of the credit crunch will have a major impact on the world’s poorest countries, which are ill-prepared for the likely fallout in 2009. ODI is working to increase understanding of the effects of the financial and banking crisis in developing countries; informing national and international discussions on solutions for international problems. Our research examines: - country-specific economic and social impacts of the financial crisis.
- the development of new rules to reduce boom and bust cycles in international capital flows, increase transparency, and enhance the voice of developing countries.
- the impact of the financial crisis on those living in poverty in developing countries, and how to make the case for aid stronger now than ever before.
