Creating Country Trade Negotiation Strategies: A handbook

- July 2006

  • Project leader(s): Christopher Stevens and Lauren Phillips
  • Project status: Complete
  • Many Commonwealth countries are engaged in multiple trade negotiations which place a huge strain on their limited financial and human resources and may have major effects on their economies. This means they require various kinds of support which include funding of trade-related activities and training of officials working on trade issues. One area where support is required and on which little has been done so far is helping countries to put together viable national trade negotiating strategies. This project seeks to address this problem. It takes further work begun in 2005, in which a series of policy briefs on the links between trade and aid were prepared. This project will produce a detailed analytical Handbook on Creating Country Trade Negotiating Strategies. The Handbook will include case studies of successful trade negotiating strategies and a work plan for implementing a strategy in other countries.

  • A project funded by Commonwealth Secretariat .
