Profile: The African Energy Policy Research Network, brings together 106 African energy researchers and policy makers from Africa who have a long-term interest in energy research and the attendant policy-making process. AFREPREN/FWD has initiated policy research studies in various African countries namely: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia among others. The aim of AFREPREN is also to strengthen local research capacity in Africa and to harness it in the service of energy policy and planning in Africa. AFREPREN's main focus is to assess, explore and propose sustainable energy options that can lead to clean energy services to the rural and urban poor in Africa.
Activities: The AFREPREN Research Programme is grouped around six major energy subject areas: Institutions and planning, Renewable energy technologies, Biomass energy, Electricity, Oil and Gas and Coal and Gasification. The major themes explored are: capacity building, management and efficiency, energy provision, environmental impact of energy, climate change and energy issues.
CSPP Activities: AFREPREN organised and hosted a pilot workshop for senior staff of CSOs that are engaged with the use of evidence to influence policy in East Africa in December 2004 that became the model for the regional consultations. AFREPREN is currently working on a study to assess the impact of its own participation in the implementation of a Kenya Ministry of Energy policy to reduce duties for kerosene stoves which are mainly used by low income families.
