ODI aims to close the gap between two themes –
poverty and economic growth – that have followed separate
paths. The Growth and Equity Programme is integral to this, taking the
stance that poverty analysis is critical for effective policies to enable inclusive growth. The poor are not all the same, and our research
reveals diverse groups that can contribute to growth, as well as
benefit from it.
This programme's approach is designed to complement and bridge the growth related work being carried out on related issues across ODI, including work by our programmes on Protected Livelihoods and Agricultural Growth, Investment and Growth and Social Development. The programme is also heavily involved in the Chronic Poverty Research Centre's work on poverty, equity and growth.
What we work on
Our research on inclusive, or pro-poor, growth looks at how to identify and articulate the (context specific) intrinsic and instrumental arguments for pro-poor or inclusive growth; analysis and advice to enable the economic and social integration of spatial poverty traps and research on the distributional benefits of changes in policy and the economy.
Our work on exclusion, discrimination and exploitation deals with differential access to both markets and services; how perceptions and social networks are shaped by and shape social identity; understandings ofsocial contracts; and policy and programmatic responses to counter discrimination and exploitation.
Our research aims to understand how risk and vulnerability can limit the ability of poor people to engage (beneficially) in growth processes. In particular, it looks at people’s coping strategies in supporting resilience and recovery; policies, programmes and market-based instruments to reduce vulnerability and mitigate risk; and links between equity and risk.
