The rights of poor and excluded men, women and children are too often neglected, and human rights violations remain all too common, particularly in areas affected by conflict. Many people, particularly in poor countries, are still denied justice and dignity.
How can development and humanitarian efforts change this picture? And what is the relevance of rights principles and frameworks to reducing poverty and inequality? ODI has been addressing these fundamental questions through its research and policy work for more than ten years, with projects exploring the links between rights and the main development and humanitarian agendas.
Our current research aims to improve the evidence base to ensure that the application of rights results in practical, tangible outcomes for the world's poorest peoples. Our work focuses on economic policies and social justice, accountability in citizen-state relations and justice and security. This is led by our Rights in Action Programme, with contributions from many other ODI programmes, including those on Politics and Governance, Social Development, Water Policy, Social Protection and Humanitarian Policy.
