    Size matters: Africa’s water resources

    Opinion - Articles and blogs - 23 April 2012

It’s not often a story on water makes the UK headlines, aside from hosepipe bans and the ‘drought’ in the south of England. But on Friday morning, the BBC Science Reporter, Matt McGrath, popped up on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme with news that Africa is sitting on vast groundwater reserves.

  2. Getting to grips with the water-energy-food ‘nexus’

    Opinion - Articles and blogs - 13 April 2012
'The ‘nexus’ has become a popular buzz word to describe the complex linkages among water, energy and food security – sectors that have traditionally remained fairly separate. Talk of the water-energy-food nexus was a hot topic at the Planet Under Pressure conference; it is also the focus of a significant German government-organised input to the UN Rio+20 Summit. This blog asks: What has brought nexus thinking to the fore, and what does this nexus look like? How does it relate to climate compatible development?'
  3. The Ides of March

    Opinion - Articles and blogs - 22 March 2012

The Ides of March has come and gone, with the promise – not a prophecy – of ‘water and sanitation for all’, at least partially fulfilled. But, I argue, the Roman reference is still relevant for this World Water Day, as we look to the role of politics and relations of power in determining levels of access to sanitation and water.

  4. Strengthening pro-poor targeting of investments by African utilities in urban water and sanitation - the role of the International Development Association of the World Bank

Publication - Research reports and studies - 29 February 2012
This report presents findings from research into the impact of selected projects on water supply and sanitation (WSS) services in urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with particular emphasis on the way in which poor areas and households are included in those investments.
  5. Voices from the Source: struggles with water security in Ethiopia

    Projects - February 2012 to July 2012
This research will encourage people to speak for themselves, to articulate their own diversity of views on what their understandings are of water ‘security and insecurity’. It will also explore how people interpret the links between these understandings and their wider food, income health and other forms of security constituting their overall human security.
  6. Scaling up rural sanitation in Vietnam: political economy constraints and opportunities

    Publication - Discussion papers - 23 January 2012
Daniel Harris, Michelle Kooy and Pham Quang Nam
This Working Paper presents findings from an analysis of the governance and political economy of water and sanitation service delivery in Vietnam. The objective of the research is to develop the utility of political economy analysis (PEA) for the water supply and sanitation (WSS) sector, with a focus on improving the operational impact of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) (and other donor) country programming.
  7. WASH service delivery in conflict-affected and fragile states

    Projects - January 2012 to December 2012
This research will examine Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes to identify the ways they impact on Peace/State Building. Based on this analysis, it will make recommendations for how future WASH programming can be designed and delivered to maximise their positive contribution to peace-and state building.
