1. Kabul calling: Transition in Afghanistan

   This event has been scheduled to take place ahead of the NATO summit in Chicago where world leaders will gather to discuss Afghanistan. 

   ‘Kabul calling’ will bring together panels in London and Kabul to provide an alternative agenda to the one in Chicago by focusing on the humanitarian implications of the withdrawal of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) from Afghanistan. 

   Panellists will explore the humanitarian consequences of the troop drawdown; discuss how a political settlement can best be facilitated and what form it should take to secure the most favourable humanitarian outcome for the Afghan people; discuss what ‘transition’ will mean for Afghans.

   This literature review identifies key trends emerging from the literature on civil–military coordination in conflicts and natural disasters. It deals with the interaction between international humanitarian and international or foreign military actors operating in crisis contexts, and offers some reflections on the relationship between national military actors and the international humanitarian community.

3. International Committee of the Red Cross: Professional standards for protection work

   At thehe Advisory Group  for the Professional Standards for Protection Work, Victoria Metcalfe will present on draft propositions based on the outcomes of the discussion held and the relevant tables and the different definitions of the concept of protection (in relation with an ODI-ICRC event on the concept of protection, which will take place in December 2011).

4. United Nations High Commission for Refugees: Global protection cluster annual retreat

   Event - Retreat - 21 - 23 March 2012

   The two day meeting follows a successful conclusion of the Global Protection Cluster (GPC) visioning process which led to the elaboration of the GPC strategy and work plan. Participants will discuss the directions that the GPC will take as it implements its new strategy. They will also examine contemporary protection challenges. Victoria Metcalfe will present on civil-military coordination and protection of civilians.

5. Minimum agency standards for mainstreaming protection: presentation of the field revised manual

   South Sudanese show support for national oil shutdown

   South Sudanese citizens show support for their Government’s decision today to shut down all national oil production, effectively cutting off the flow of crude oil from South Sudan to the neighbouring Republic of Sudan.

   Juba calling: what next for South Sudan?

   Event - Public event - 14 March 2012 11:00 - 13:00 (GMT+00)

   Following the decision in January to shut down its oil production, South Sudan's government has introduced austerity measures to compensate for the loss of revenue. Juba has announced that spending on everything except salaries will be halved.
    
   This event, jointly organised by HPG and the Associate Parliamentary Group on Sudan and South Sudan (APG), brings together panels in London and Juba (via videoconference) to explore the urgent humanitarian challenges which lie ahead for the world's newest nation.

   The police, humanitarians and the protection of civilians: coordinating ‘civilian’ contributions

   This roundtable is the second event in a two-year research and public affairs project led by the Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) at the Overseas Development Institute which explores new developments in the relationship between international military and security actors and the international humanitarian community with a view to facilitating more effective and principled coordination in crisis contexts. How humanitarian and military and police actors coordinate on their respective contributions to the protection of civilians is a key focus of this project.

   Network Paper 72 - Local to Global Protection in Myanmar (Burma), Sudan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe

   This event launches the Network Paper 72, Local to Global Protection in Myanmar, Sudan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe. 
   
   The Local to Global Protection Project (L2GP) is an initiative to document and promote local perspectives on protection in major humanitarian crises. Based on research in Myanmar, Sudan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe, L2GP explores how people living in areas affected by natural disaster and armed conflict understand ‘protection’ – what they value, and how they go about protecting themselves, their families and their communities. The research also examines how people view the roles of others, including the state, non-state actors, community-based organisations and national and international aid agencies.

10. The concept of protection: towards a mutual understanding - roundtable on civil–military coordination

    Event - Round-table - 12 December 2011

    The event explored how international humanitarian and military actors understand and put into practice the concept of the protection of civilians. The roundtable brought together key international military and humanitarian actors to explore their respective objectives, rationale and approaches to the protection of civilians.  The discussion also examined the specific roles and responsibilities that each have in supporting enhanced protection of civilian populations.
