  1. Making elections count

    Opinion - Articles and blogs - 25 June 2009

Elections are often a barometer for the state of democracy in a country, and are part of the political process. As such, donors need to be aware that their role is limited, as is their influence on the process or results. Too often, donor support for elections is focused on the months or weeks in the run-up to polling day, and is based on the provision of observers and technical assistance. Donors are, increasingly, recognising the limitations of their current approach, and the Opinion encourages them to shift to longer-term and consistent support to the electoral process.

    Publication - Briefing papers - 12 August 2008
Lise Rakner, Alina Rocha Menocal and Verena Fritz

This Project Briefing summarises the key findings of a study on international democracy assistance by ODI and the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI). It finds that the relationship between democratisation and ‘good governance’ can be complex, with the two at times pulling in opposite directions, and calls for greater recognition of the tensions between long-term processes of democracy and the need for quick results.

    David Booth and Verena Fritz

This report synthesises the findings of a two-year research project commissioned by the Advisory Board for Irish Aid which speaks directly to the agenda of Accra in September and Doha in November 2008, when the international community will assess the progress made in implementing commitments on development assistance.

Lise Rakner (Chr. Michelsen Institute), Alina Rocha Menocal (ODI) and Verena Fritz (ODI)
