Syrian troops and rebels fought over the country's biggest city Aleppo as President Bashar al-Assad's key foreign backer Iran gathered ministers from like-minded states for talks on Thursday about how to end the conflict.

    Syria crisis: an update on the humanitarian response

    This event was convened to examine the humanitarian implications of the war in Syria. By August 2012 the conflict had spread to the two major cities, Damascus and Aleppo displacing thousands and triggering the flight of hundreds of thousands of refugees. 

    Discussion at this second roundtable on Syria focused on the humanitarian response within Syria and regionally by bringing together representatives of the leading agencies in Damascus, Amman, Rome and London. The discussion provided an opportunity for humanitarian partners to explore how best to respond to the needs of all those caught up in the conflict. 

    The first roundtable reflected on the current response of the international community and consider its impact on civilians caught up in the conflict.

    A week spent at the HPG/PRDU Advanced Course on Conflict, Crisis and Transitions, held in York for the third year running, was a week invested in reflection. The aim of the course is to provide space and constructive support for practitioners and policy-makers to think about conflict, crisis, and transitions. It covers a host of challenging issues, from humanitarian action to durable solutions, international law and transitional justice, stabilisation, mediation, evaluation.

    Advanced course on conflict, crisis and transitions - 2012

    Event - Course - 18 - 25 July 2012

    The Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) at the Overseas Development Institute and the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit (PRDU) at the University of York are partnering to offer the third ‘Advanced Course on Conflict, Crisis and Transitions’, a week-long programme targeting mid-career and senior professionals.

    This discussion, hosted by the Associate Parliamentary Group on Sudan and South Sudan, will focus on the important events in South Sudan and Sudan from the past year, including the achievements and challenges for both countries. Crucially, it offers an opportunity to look forward to the futures of South Sudan and Sudan, and the role the UK Government can play in contributing towards peace and development. It begins with the rationale for such engagement and the applicable legal frameworks. It then provides an overview of the challenges that humanitarian actors face when engaging in dialogue with ANSAs on issues of access, assistance and protection.
