On 10 July the World Trade Organisation concluded the Fourth Global Review of Aid for Trade. Trade ministers and officials will soon be heading to Bali to attend the Ninth WTO Ministerial Conference (3-6 December 2013) where they are expected to discuss future directions for Aid for Trade (AfT).

To deliver on post-2015 goals, we need a data revolution in budgets too
The High-Level Panel has called for a data revolution to track progress towards international development targets. They were right to do so. But that’s not the only revolution that we need. If the international community is serious about ‘going to zero’ on poverty and other goals, we need to know what it will cost. Targets count for little if you can’t pay for them. And we also need to track the money to make sure it actually gets to where it is needed.

This side event at the World Trade Organization's Fourth Global Review of Aid for Trade brought together a range of contributions to an ODI-COMSEC volume on Aid for Trade (Aft) and featured presentations and facilitated discussions on empirical evidence on the effectiveness of AfT; on AfT and global value chains; and on future directions on AfT.

According to the OECD 12.1% of total OECD aid was delivered to NGOs in 2010/11; the US, the world’s largest donor, delivers almost double this figure (21.7%) via NGOs. But is this aid helping to strengthen local civil society in the long term?
