   Monitoring protection: asking the impossible?

   In today's armed conflicts, civilians bear the brunt of hostilities. Humanitarian agencies strive to improve the protection afforded to civilians, but how can they better monitor and evaluate protection programming to ensure that they best serve those in need? This event, co-hosted by the Humanitarian Policy Group and the International Committee of the Red Cross aims to understand the challenges of monitoring protecting work, and promote discussion on ways forward.

   This event is scheduled to launch Sanctuary in the city? Urban displacement and vulnerability in the Gaza Strip, a look at internal displacement over the past ten years in Gaza. With a live video link to Gaza, this event will bring together Palestinian and international speakers to explore the multi-faceted effects of the conflict on civilians, and up to date assessment of how displaced populations have fared since the Pillar of Defence military operation in November 2012.

   The crisis in Syria

   ODI On...

   Responding to the need for deliberation and coordination amongst humanitarian actors in Syria and neighbouring countries, HPG convened two high level roundtables. These brought together UN agencies, NGOs, donor representatives, and national and diaspora humanitarian groups to discuss the deepening political and humanitarian crisis, consider its impact on civilians caught up in the conflict and reflect on the response of the international and national community.

   Syria crisis: an update on the humanitarian response

   Event - Round-table - 31 August 2012 14:00 - 16:00 (GMT+00)

   This event was convened to examine the humanitarian implications of the war in Syria. By August 2012 the conflict had spread to the two major cities, Damascus and Aleppo displacing thousands and triggering the flight of hundreds of thousands of refugees. 
   
   Discussion at this second roundtable on Syria focused on the humanitarian response within Syria and regionally by bringing together representatives of the leading agencies in Damascus, Amman, Rome and London. The discussion provided an opportunity for humanitarian partners to explore how best to respond to the needs of all those caught up in the conflict. 

   The first roundtable reflected on the current response of the international community and consider its impact on civilians caught up in the conflict.

   This discussion, hosted by the Associate Parliamentary Group on Sudan and South Sudan, will focus on the important events in South Sudan and Sudan from the past year, including the achievements and challenges for both countries. Crucially, it offers an opportunity to look forward to the futures of South Sudan and Sudan, and the role the UK Government can play in contributing towards peace and development.
