Tax evasion and tax avoidance feature highly on the agenda of this year’s meeting of leaders of the world’s richest countries starting today at Lough Erne. Recent reports on the low or no corporation tax paid by large companies, and on tax evasion by individuals, have made headlines. Evidence of the erosive effects of such practices on public revenues and their implications for development has led to mounting public demand for reform.

On International Migration Day, we are reminded of the huge flows of both migrants and remittances in today’s world. According to the United Nations, more than 213 million people (around 3% of the world’s population) lived outside their countries of birth in 2010, and over 700 million had migrated within their own countries.

Inter-agency social protection financing workshop 2012 is a follow up to the 2011 Financing Social Protection Conference. The workshop aims to i) share and review progress on work on the key issues relating to financing social protection identified at the 2011 conference, ii) identify priority issues for future research, and iii) agree a work-plan for financing social protection issues which we will together incorporate into a joint project proposal for donor funding.
