    This World Refugee Day the global commitment to addressing the rights of urban refugees is in serious doubt.

    Following a spate of grenade attacks late last year in Nairobi, and Somali militant attacks in the north of the country, the Kenyan Government retaliated with attempts to enforce the encampment of urban refugees. Collectively branded as a threat to national security, the 55,000 refugees living in Nairobi have had their lives and livelihoods made illegal.

    What are the challenges facing displaced populations in the context of rapid urbanisation? Based on more than 250 interviews with residents, IDPs, and Afghan refugees, as well as those tasked with assisting them, this paper seeks to examine urban displacement and vulnerability in Peshawar, Pakistan, one of the largest recipient cities for refugees and IDPs in South Asia.

    Learning from the city: humanitarian action in urban areas

    With rapid urbanisation taking place on a global scale, urban areas are increasingly affected by humanitarian emergencies. Amid the growing recognition of the need to address the operational implications of urban risk and vulnerability in the humanitarian sector, this event will launch the British Red Cross’ recent study on humanitarian action in urban areas: Learning from the city.

    In Myanmar's capital Yangon, on March 20-21, a business investment summit presented Myanmar as a stable, growing democracy eager to establish agriculture, infrastructure, financial and manufacturing partnerships with leading international companies.

    The messages were clear: Myanmar's transition to democracy is irreversible, wide-ranging reforms are underway and the country is now ripe for investment and trade.
