The ‘3Ts’ of the G8 summit – tax, trade and transparency – are interlinked, especially through the axis between transparency and tax, as Kevin Watkins outlines. Discussions on tax are bringing to light the hidden worlds of corporate tax avoidance and tax evasion by individuals, whereas – led by the UK – the transparency agenda is focusing on land, open data and extractives.
The debate about what the G8 can deliver on transparency is heating up, with the UK coalition government under increasing pressure to provide leadership. But what are the issues at stake? And what, if anything, will summit talks between a group of political leaders from the world’s richest nations mean for the world’s poorest people?

This event will explore the findings and policy implications of the latest ODI research on how aid can be best packaged to support governance and institutional development. The research draws on case studies in Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.
For people interested in transparency, these are very interesting times. The last few years have seen a flurry of new international initiatives aimed at promoting transparency in a variety of areas of government action. The Open Government Partnership, launched in 2011, already has over 50 member governments who have undertaken to promote transparency and openness and to allow for independent reviews of their efforts.
