    Humanitarian negotiations: engagement with armed groups in Sudan and South Sudan

    This event will examine the role of humanitarian negotiations with state and non-state armed groups in Darfur, Southern Kordofan and Jonglei State. Interviews with armed groups, the results of field research and practical experience in humanitarian engagement, with armed groups will be shared with the audience as speakers discuss whether these negotiations contributed to a stronger and more effective humanitarian response in the region.

    South Sudan at a crossroads: humanitarian response in a changing context

    Much has been accomplished in South Sudan in recent years, but has the humanitarian situation in the world’s newest nation improved? This event will launch edition 57 of the Humanitarian Exchange on South Sudan, which examines from different perspectives the drivers of continuing humanitarian needs in the country and how humanitarian, development and government actors interpret and respond to these.

  3. Tearfund WASH service delivery in South Sudan: contributions to peace-building and state-building

    This report forms part of a one-year DFID-funded research project, implemented by Tearfund and ODI, that aims to explore the links between service delivery of water supply and sanitation and the wider processes of state-building and peace-building in fragile and conflict-affected states. It has focused on Tearfund’s water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions implemented through the ‘Capacity Building to Improve Humanitarian Action in the Water Sanitation and Hygiene’ programme, funded by DFID CHASE. The objective of the programme was to increase the capacity of Tearfund disaster management team operations, local partner projects and local government departments in conflict-affected and humanitarian contexts, to support improved access to potable water, sanitation and public health education (PHE), resulting in sustainable improved health, well-being and dignity for grassroots communities.

    BBC correspondent for South Sudan and Sudan, James Copnall, was guest speaker at a roundtable event hosted by the Secure Livelihoods Research Consortium (SLRC) and the Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG). This event brought together journalists, researchers and academics to explore the political, humanitarian and development issues faced by South Sudan at present.
