    Holding cash transfers to account

    Do cash transfer programmes effectively address issues of social exclusion? These and other questions will be explored in an ODI event which will present findings from Transforming Cash Transfers, a DFID-funded study that investigates beneficiary and community perspectives on unconditional cash transfer programmes in five countries - Kenya, Mozambique, the Occupied Palestinian Territories (both Gaza and West Bank), Uganda and Yemen.

    The impact of discriminatory social norms on adolescent girls

    ODI has partnered with Wikigender, the OECD, DFID and The Girl Hub to produce an online discussion exploring the impact of discriminatory social norms on adolescent girls. We would like to hear your views, lessons learned and best practices and policies on empowering adolescent girls. The inputs of this discussion will be presented via summary report at the 'Empowering adolescent girls by tackling social norms' event, to be held on the 26th April 2013.

    Linking action on poverty and child protection: what do we know? what are the gaps?

    What does the evidence on linkages between child protection and broader anti-poverty action look like? What are key gaps that need to be filled? What are the implications for future knowledge and action?

    ODI and the Oak Foundation host a public event to discuss these very questions with particular attention on violence against children, sexual abuse and exploitation, early marriage and inadequate care/ neglect of children.  We will also discuss lessons from other areas of child protection.

  7. ‘Knowledge Policy and Power in International Development: A Practical Guide’ – European Book Launch

    On 1st May ODI will officially launch a new practical book focused on understanding how knowledge, policy and power interact to promote or prevent change in international development. This launch event provides an opportunity to discuss the book's findings and recommendations with experts from the Global South and North, as well as consider ways in which these aspects can be taken forward practically.

  8. Safer motherhood for all: innovative social protection mechanisms and their contribution to MDG5 and beyond

    Social protection approaches – in particular conditional cash transfer programmes (CCTs) – provide popular tools to improve health and educational outcomes for children across the developing world, and are increasingly being piloted to address challenges of safe motherhood. Opinions abound as to the effectiveness of CCTs and their capacity for long-term social transformation is rightly up for discussion. 

    To mark International Women’s Day, ODI is bringing together a panel of scholars and practitioners to explore the social protection innovations increasingly being employed to tackle maternal ill-health, and to consider how to take such interventions to scale.

    What now for children? The potential impact of a double-dip recession on child development and well-being

    With the prospect of a double-dip recession hot on the heels of the 2008/9 financial crisis, this public meeting draws on a recent theme issue of Development Policy Review to consider the implications of economic shocks on child well-being.  The event will explore how children fare in times of economic crisis, how policy can mediate such shocks, and what lessons can be learnt from the past to enable both resilience and preparedness for future economic crises.

    Free copies of the DPR theme issue ‘Impacts of economic crises on child well-being’ will be available at the event.

    Mainstreaming marginalised knowledge into development policy processes

    This event will discuss strategies for mainstreaming marginalised sources of knowledge - including from children, women and marginalised communities - into international development. It will draw on perspectives from the global South and North.
