The First Consultation on Agricultural Information Management (COAIM) June 2000. The Consultation covered all aspects of agricultural information management, capacity building and improving access to relevant information. It sets out the policy framework for WAICENTs work. The Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) provides policy-makers and relief agencies throughout the world with the most up-to-date information available on all aspects of food supply and demand. IFAD is supporting an Internet based system in Latin America and the Caribbean - FIDAMERICA - that has used ICTs to assist the rural communities to access agricultural, market and technical information and to improve access to financial systems. It offers facilities for knowledge and information exchange through electronic conferencing, e-mail, databases and web sites. FIDAMERICA, now in its second phase, has 41 projects and programmes in the region and involves about 3600 community organisations and 500,000 families. www.fidamerica.cl
Electronic Networking for Rural Asia/Pacific Projects (ENRAP) is an IFAD-funded initiative to support internet use and knowledge sharing amongst rural development projects in Asia/Pacific region. The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) assists developing countries to utilise the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies (ICTs) towards realising sustainable development. IICD uses a cross-sectoral approach, in which local 'agents of change' themselves identify and develop proposals for realistic ICT applications. In IICD's view, local ownership forms an essential basis for sustainable socio-economic development. The Information for Development Program (infoDev) began in September 1995 with the objective of addressing the obstacles facing developing countries in an increasingly information-driven world economy. It is a global grant program managed by the World Bank to promote innovative projects on the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for economic and social development, with a special emphasis on the needs of the poor in developing countries. www.infodev.org
The Acacia Initiative is an international program to empower sub-Saharan communities with the ability to apply information and communication technologies to their own social and economic development. Acacia works mainly with rural and disadvantaged communities, and particularly their women and youth groups. Often these communities find themselves isolated from the ICT networks to which their urban counterparts increasingly have access.
