Indicators for Assessing Governance
The WGA initiative puts forward a framework
for assessing governance that focuses on six principles
and six arenas. Based on our work we have identified
1 indicator for each box of the matrix - giving a total
of 36 indicators. Each of these indicators has been
identified in consultation with a range of academics,
officials in international organizations concerned with
governance, and representatives of both governments
and civil society in developing countries. We believe
that governance should serve a notion of development
that sets the dignity and rights of human beings at
the centre. Importantly, the indicators have been tested
in the first phase of the WGA project - and found acceptable
in 16 countries representing 51% of the world's population.
Taken together they provide a way to assess governance
in a coherent and comprehensive fashion.
Summary of Indicators for Assessing
Governance

In addition to the 36 indicators, we
also collect additional information regarding separation
of powers, gender issues, the role of ethnicity, poverty
and government support for reform.
