His research interests include the development of social protection systems, international and comparative dimensions of social policy, poverty reduction strategies, social exclusion, governance and accountability, and decentralisation and community-driven development.

Sonia has a background in international business management and international development. She has been a programme manager at ODI since 2007. She is currenly programme manager of the Secure Livelihoods Research Consortium (SLRC). She previously held the role of programme manager of the Africa, Power and Politics Programme (APPP) for its entire duration (2007-2012). Prior joining ODI, she worked as a programme manager for Action Against Hunger including long posting to Liberia, DRC, Burundi and Lao PRD.
