ODI has led the way in tracking international support to developing countries and analysing the governance principles that underpin this finance flow.

Climate finance is a major issue for the international community where consensus has yet to be found. Information provision is one starting point to build such a consensus.

Much needs to be done to improve understanding of how and what climate finance will support at the national and sub-national levels in recipient countries.

Three major research areas underpin how climate finance will evolve over the coming years and represent ODI’s research focus:

  • Mapping the delivery of programmatic funding for climate change at the national (and sub-national) level so that the needs of the poor are met
  • Defining the international architecture that will best support strengthened national governance of climate finance
  • Determining the scope of the private sector’s role in transferring financial resources to vulnerable countries.
