Adaptation and resilience

Poor people and poor countries are increasingly facing complex and interconnected risks. Climate change is aggravating these risks, being partly responsible for higher food and fuel prices, more severe and frequent disasters, lower agricultural yields and changing access to water.

In this landscape risk management, resilience-building and adaptation to climate change are key components of development. The pressure is therefore on to identify the most effective conceptual frameworks, delivery systems and good practices for securing improvements in resilience and capacity to adapt at different scales.

ODI’s work investigates the concepts of resilience, adaptive capacity and risk management from different disciplinary perspectives, including: economics, social development and protection, politics and power, governance and security. In combining these, we bring a unique blend of experience, skills and methodological expertise to key issues, including:

  • adapting to environmental change and uncertainty in the water sector
  • risk reduction and management
  • supporting adaptive capacity
  • systems for managing climate-related disaster risks.
