The Politics and Governance team believes that a solid analysis of policy processes, institutions and power, and the role of the state is critical to development. Our mission is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of politics in development and aid delivery. We undertake research, advisory work and public affairs activities in three areas:
• Developmental states
• Governance, democracy and accountability
• Aid policy and politics
One of our key strengths is our range of analytical methods – from political economy analysis and case studies to quantitative techniques. Using these we explore the interactions between formal and informal politics and social relations, their impact on transformative processes and how the changing relationship between states and citizens influences governance and development.
A major focus of our work over the next five years will be the DFID-funded Research Programme Consortium on ‘Power, Politics and the State: How to develop political institutions that work for the poor.’ This global collaboration with partners from Ghana, Benin, Niger, South Africa, France and the USA will seek to address the growing recognition that the way power is exercised in low-income states needs to change if widespread poverty reduction is to be achieved. The project will combine research, capacity building, policy influence and policy development.
The Politics & Governance team leads the ODI-wide Rights in Action programme, working on the theory and practice of human rights.
In recent years our work has been funded by a wide variety of organisations, including development agencies within the Japanese, Irish, British, Swiss, French, and Netherlands governments as well as multilaterals such as the OECD. We also work with foundations, NGOs and aid-recipient governments.
