The integration between aid and politics is widely seen in the humanitarian sector as a cause of contracting humanitarian space, as humanitarians lose their independence and neutrality and are associated with contested political projects. This meeting discussed these trends and the evidence for integration negatively affecting humanitarian space.

This meeting explored the extent to which the ‘criminalisation of aid’ following 9/11 has affected humanitarian space in various settings, and discuss appropriate and possible responses.

This meeting assessed the nature and composition of the humanitarian system and the impacts these have on humanitarian space. It also questioned if, how and why the objectives, activities and coverage of key aid agencies (NGOs, UN and Red Cross/Red Crescent) have changed or expanded over time.

Thematic group discussions - How can we better promote gender-sensitive social protection?

Event - Round-table - 1 November 2010 14:00 - 17:00 (GMT+01 (BST))
The lunch time meeting will be followed by two more focused thematic sessions in the afternoon on some key unanswered questions about gender and social protection. Each afternoon session will begin with a ten minute presentation/discussion by the chair of the respective sessions to set the stage for discussion. Participants from a broad range of backgrounds will be encouraged, including NGOs, academia, think tanks, donor agencies and the media.

Humanitarian Space: A review of trends and challenges

Event - Round-table - 20 October 2010 - 30 April 2011

This series undertook a critical examination of the evolving dynamics and challenges related to different aspects of humanitarian space and associated trends of politicisation and securitisation of assistance. The meetings addressed a number of key questions and issues that have important implications for the nature and conditions of humanitarian action in contexts where humanitarian space is deemed to be restricted or contracting.
