A smarter approach to governance in Africa

This event launches the Africa Power and Politics Programme (APPP) synthesis report: 'Development as a collective action problem: Addressing the real challenges of African governance'. The report brings together key research from APPP's programme of work led by ODI over a five year period with teams in Benin, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, Ghana, Malawi, Niger, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

This event provides a first opportunity for readers of the report to get to grips with the APPP proposals and consider their implications.

Politics, state building and service delivery

This event brought together researchers and practitioners to examine the impact of political context and institutions on service delivery; and the role of service delivery in the process of state building and creating legitimacy.

Syria crisis: an update on the humanitarian response

This event was convened to examine the humanitarian implications of the war in Syria. By August 2012 the conflict had spread to the two major cities, Damascus and Aleppo displacing thousands and triggering the flight of hundreds of thousands of refugees. 

Discussion at this second roundtable on Syria focused on the humanitarian response within Syria and regionally by bringing together representatives of the leading agencies in Damascus, Amman, Rome and London. The discussion provided an opportunity for humanitarian partners to explore how best to respond to the needs of all those caught up in the conflict. 

The first roundtable reflected on the current response of the international community and consider its impact on civilians caught up in the conflict.

Re-examining public financial management reforms: new frameworks and country evidence

This round-table brought together leading researchers on public financial management (PFM) to examine and debate evidence on budget reforms in low-income African countries. The round-table addressed frameworks for approaching and analysing PFM reforms, pre-conditions and political economy factors, prioritisation and phasing, and sustainability.

Syria crisis: the humanitarian response

This closed-door roundtable on the Syria crisis brought together leading humanitarian aid agencies and senior figures with direct experience of humanitarian work in the country. The purpose of the meeting was to examine the response of the international community and consider its impact on the civilian population.
