Horizontal Inequalities as a cause of conflict: findings and policy conclusions

The Centre for Research on Inequality, Human Security and Ethnicity (CRISE) was initiated in 2003 (funded by DFID) with the aim of  studying multiethnic societies, investigating why some experience political instability and violent conflict, often labelled as ‘ethnic’, while others manage to solve disputes relatively peacefully. This event will cover the major findings of the Centre.

Achieving water security: global concerns and local realities

Why does water security remain an elusive goal for many countries?  What factors make it difficult to sustain services and manage resources effectively at scale? How do rural households experience water insecurity, and are current policy responses adequate? This launch event, seminar and photo exhibition held in partnership with WaterAid and the International Water and Sanitation Centre will launch two major research outputs which examine these questions using detailed field level evidence.

Humanitarian Exchange 56: Civil-military coordination in humanitarian action

This event will launch the 56th edition of Humanitarian Exchange the theme of which is civil-military coordination in humanitarian action. Drawing on the articles in this issue and recent research undertaken by ODI's Humanitarian Policy Group, as well as their own experience, speakers will discuss the barriers to coordination - both real and perceived - and whether progress has been or can be made in resolving these.

ALNAP will host a book launch and discussion on  Time to Listen: Hearing People on the Receiving End of International Aidwhichhas just been published by CDA Collaborative Learning Projects.  This book summarises the experiences and analysis of nearly 6,000 people in 20 aid receiving countries, as well as the reflections of aid workers themselves, on the effectiveness of international aid efforts as captured through The Listening Project

How do developing economies grow?

Justin Yifu Lin, the first non-Western chief economist of the World Bank and architect of China’s economic reform, is someone we should listen to when he offers his ideas on economic growth. In his book THE QUEST FOR PROSPERITY: How Developing Economies Can Take Off, Lin focuses on what developing nations can do to help themselves, without the need of international assistance or influence, drawing on a lifetime’s worth of research in international economics, from China to the World Bank.

The other side: humanitarian engagement with the Taliban in Afghanistan

This event launches a new report into how aid agencies engage with the Taliban to gain access to Afghans in need of assistance. It offers a valuable and rare insight into how the Taliban view humanitarian and development assistance. The report draws on dozens of interviews with Taliban militia and leaders and conversely, investigates the approaches used by aid agencies to gain access to populations in Taliban-held territory.

The changing humanitarian landscape: obstacles and opportunities
