Humanitarianism: Past, Present, Future

This two and a half day conference explored the past, present, and future of humanitarianism. Eleanor Davey (HPG) gave a presentation entitled "Why the humanitarian sector needs a historical consciousness: motivation, methodology and challenges" during a session chaired by Wendy Fenton (HPN). Wendy Fenton also chaired another session entitled "From local to global: making local agency count at the global policy level".

Experiencing justice in fragile and conflict-affected contexts

Prof Tim Allen will chair a panel discussion on the politics of practice in security and justice programming in a joint event with the ODI.

This lecture is the closing event of a two day Expert Meeting on Justice and Security held at the ODI, in collaboration with the JSRP, and with support from DFID, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark the Christian Michelsen Institute, the Asia Foundation and Saferworld.

The event is free and open to all on a first come, first served basis.

Humanitarian Assistance Webcast 12: DRR, Inc.: Can the Private Sector Revive Resilience?

This humanitarian assistance webcast brought together an expert panel, which included Simon Levine of the Humanitarian Policy Group, to examine the following questions:
  • Should the public or private sector lead investment in resilience building? What are the costs and benefits of each approach?
  • How can the humanitarian and development communities work with the private sector on DRR while remaining impartial actors?
  • How can the model of resilience building and DRR be replicated in areas where private investment is perceived as high risk due to factors such as violence?

Workshop on Sudan

This workshop saught to draw on a range of expertise to analyse the current develpments in Sudan, within the context of the region, and to identify scenarios for Sudan's future and the factors that could make each more or less likely to occur. Sara was a key speaker at this workshop.

Research for global transformation - 3rd international conference on research for development

This conference, the third of the series, showcased the work of the National Centre of Competence in Research and looks forward to how research can enable sustainable transformation in development. John Young, ODI's Director of Impact Assessment, Partnerships and RAPID, will present a key note speech on 'Enabling research in global transformation'.
