Japan will occupy an influential position in 2008, particularly in relation to African development. It is presiding over the G8 and will host the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July. It is also hosting the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) at the end of May. Japan has sought to develop a leadership role in Africa through this forum, which is convened once every five years. How and where could Japan bring its influence to bear this year, particularly with regard to African development? How might this influence impact upon the international development agenda in 2008 and beyond? ODI is organising a series of events in the lead up to both TICAD IV and the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit to analyse these and other questions.
The events in this series will examine diversity in the approaches of donors including Japan and the UK, their potential for complementarity, and specific analyses of the TICAD IV and G8 processes. Further meetings will be announced shortly.

At this ODI event, different donor approaches will be discussed and their potential for complementarity debated. In addition, the question of whether lessons from the Asian growth experience can be applied to sub-Saharan Africa will be examined.

For the first time, in 2008 Japan will host both the G8 Summit and TICAD, and it is widely expected that many of the issues raised in TICAD will be incorporated into discussions at the G8. The ODI is pleased to bring together key representatives from Japan, Africa and the UK to discuss Japan’s participatory approach to African development.
