Development Studies Association (DSA) Annual Conference 2004: Bridging Research and Policy in Development

ODI helped to coordinate the 2004 Annual Conference of the Development Studies Association of UK and Ireland, on the theme of Bridging the Gap between Research and Policy in Development. The aim of the Conference was to foster a better understanding of how research can contribute to pro-poor policies, and systems to put it into practice. The theme, "Bridging Research and Policy" very much reflected the special vocation of the two organisers, DFID and ODI.

Politics and Humanitarian Aid: Debates, Dilemmas and Dissension

The conference set out to review the changing role of humanitarian assistance, and to understand the implications of this change for aid agencies. The diverse views and reactions of speakers and participants at the conference reflect the wider debate within the humanitarian community about the relevance of traditional humanitarian principles, and the appropriate relationship between humanitarianism and politics.

Capital Account Liberalisation: A Developing Country Perspective

aim of this conference was to set out the policy choices facing poorer countries and explore whether the lessons from middle income countries are relevant or not. Participants considered the effectiveness of capital controls, and practical-capacity building and policy implementation issues in the poorer countries, particularly in relation to issues around monitoring flows, the effectiveness of monetary policy and the ability to sterilise flows.
