Sudan’s deteriorating lifeline: strategies to support livestock production and trade

9 September 2013 13:00 - 14:30 (GMT+01 (BST))
Venue:
Overseas Development Institute
Details
Livestock is one of Darfur’s main economic assets, making a major contribution to Sudan’s national livestock and meat exports. During ten years of conflict, Darfur's livestock trade has been badly affected. Contracting volumes of livestock brought to market and a loss of competitiveness as trading costs soar, has left the regional and national economy struggling as well as many Sudanese people who make a living in the sector.

The importance of pastoralist livestock production for Sudan’s economy, the impact of conflict on Darfur's livestock trade, and new ways of monitoring livestock mobility will be discussed by the panel of experts. Current day herd management practices, marketing, and challenges to mobility and local adaptive processes will also be raised, along with recommendations that are designed to support sustainable growth, and policies to support the livestock trade for the eventual recovery of Darfur's economy.

Research studies:
1. On The Hoof: Livestock Trade In Darfur, Sudan, authored by Margie Buchanan-Smith and Abdul Jabbar Abdulla Fadul, with Abdul Rahman Tahir and Yacob Aklilu

2.Standing Wealth: Pastoralist Livestock Production and Local Livelihoods in Sudan authored by Saverio Krätli, Omer el Dirani and Helen Young, with Samira Mohammed Ahmed, Osman Mohammed Babiker, Musa Adam Ismail, Abdelazeem Hassan, Azharia El Bushra.

3. From the Bahr to the Jizzu: Tracking pastoralist livestock mobility in Sudan is an ongoing longitudinal study tracking livestock mobility in the Darfur and Kordofan regions of Sudan by the Feinstein International Institute, constituting an important part of the UNEP Sudan Integrated Environment Programme.
