John Young joined ODI in May 2001 after five years in Indonesia managing the DFID Decentralised Livestock Services in the Eastern Regions of Indonesia (DELIVERI) Project - an action-research project to promote more decentralised and client-oriented livestock services – where he also led on communication, policy engagement and monitoring and evaluation. Before that he was ITDG's Country Director in Kenya, responsible for managing the group's practical project and research work on a wide range of technologies to ensure that lessons were effectively communicated to government and non-government policy makers. Since joining ODI he has been involved in projects on decentralisation and rural services, information and information systems, strengthening southern research capacity, and research communication. John started and then developed the RAPID programme into a global leader on the research-policy interface, and was instrumental in developing RAPID’s key approaches on policy influence (ROMA). Now, after two years as Deputy Director of ODI, John continues to lead the RAPID programme, with an emphasis on impact assessments and evaluation, and with organisation-wide responsibility for developing strategic partnerships.

DFID-ESRC Growth Research Programme

The Department for International Development (DFID) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Growth Research Programme  seeks to generate high quality evidence on economic growth in low income countries.

The first call for proposals focused on three core areas:

Event - Conference - 20 - 22 August 2012

This conference, the third of the series, showcased the work of the National Centre of Competence in Research and looks forward to how research can enable sustainable transformation in development. John Young, ODI's Director of Impact Assessment, Partnerships and RAPID, will present a key note speech on 'Enabling research in global transformation'.

3ie grantees policy influencing clinic

Event - Workshop - 16 - 18 July 2012

The workshop aims to ensure that 3ie grantees are familiarised with principles, processes and tools of evidence-informed policy influencing, research communication strategies and principles for measuring policy impact of research and can use these to build on and improve their policy engagement strategies. Increasing resilience to natural hazards

Projects - July 2012 to June 2017

Earthquakes and volcanoes cause enormous human suffering and economic damage, accounting for the loss of millions of lives, and at a cost of billions of dollars. Further research effort is needed to enhance the understanding of the physical processes behind such natural hazards, but also their effects and implications for their prediction and mitigation.


Evidence-based policy making: challenges, methods, and innovations in assessing policy influence

In this seminar, Fred Carden, director of the Evaluation Unit at the International Development Research Centre, Canada; John Hoddinott, senior research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute; and John Young, deputy director at the Overseas Development Institute, UK, discuss the need for assessing policy influence, share their experiences, and talk about the challenges of this process.
