Simone Haysom works on issues to do with displacement and humanitarian action in urban areas, and on HPG's Civil-Military Coordination project. Simone has an MPhil in Geography from the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining HPG, Simone researched the role of local institutions in facilitating urban service delivery in South Africa.

This HPG Working Paper examines the successive waves of forced displacement in Gaza in recent years and explores the consequences of upheaval generated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for the citizens of Gaza. Based on hundreds of interviews with residents and those tasked with assisting them the paper considers the many factors that generate displacement, loss of shelter, livelihoods and life in the Gaza Strip.

This year’s World Disasters Report aims to widen and sharpen the focus on the complex causes of forced migration and the diverse consequences and impacts for both affected populations and humanitarian actors. Chapter 4 - Forced migration in an urban context: relocating the humanitarian agenda was written by Simone Haysom, Sara Pantuliano, and Eleanor Davey.

Workshop on South-South Humanitarianism in Contexts of Forced Displacement

This workshop provided a space for critical reflection upon the various histories, modes of operation and implications of diverse “alternative” models of humanitarian action; such critical analysis is particularly important given increasing governmental and UN interest in Southern-led humanitarianism for a variety of financial and political reasons. Simone Haysom gave a presentation on contemporary Humanitarian Action and the Role of Southern Actors. A podcast of her presentation is available on the website.
