Leni Wild

Research Fellow, Politics and Governance

Leni Wild has a particular interest in governance and service delivery; aid, accountability and democracy promotion; and support to fragile states and post-conflict countries. This is underpinned by strong skills in political economy analysis and knowledge of aid effectiveness. She has conducted fieldwork in Eastern Africa (Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, South Sudan) and parts of Asia (China, Nepal).

She was previously a Research Fellow in the international team at the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) and Research Officer at Education Action, an NGO working in post-conflict countries, where she managed programmes in Northern Uganda, Sierra Leone and Gaza.

The political economy of roads: an overview and analysis of existing literature

Publication - Bibliography and literature reviews - 1 October 2012
This piece draws on literature from a range of countries and contexts to provide a structured political economy analysis in relation to the roads sector. It explores how a variety of governance conditions interact with the particular characteristics of the road sector to facilitate or impede positive results and reforms.

Women’s leadership and participation in peace and security and humanitarian response

Projects - September 2012 to June 2013
This project evaluates the contribution of UN Women to increase women’s leadership and participation in peace and security, extracting the results achieved and lessons learned by the predecessor entities and examining these in the context of the new Strategic Plan and its aspirations in this area. It will also assess the coherence of the design of the humanitarian response area in the context of UN Women’s mandate to provide forward looking recommendations.

Common constraints and incentive problems in service delivery

There is growing recognition that, despite significant increases in resourcing, public service delivery is still failing in many developing countries. This review explores the existing evidence base in three sectors (education, health, water and sanitation) across multiple countries. The review points to a set of five common political economy constraints and incentive problems that affect levels of performance.

Case studies on development co-operation and accountability: Uganda, Peru, Mozambique and Mali

The OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC), through its Network on Governance (GOVNET), has spent three years researching ways to improve donor support to domestic accountability. This included a series of case studies (in Uganda, Peru, Mali, and Mozambique) to explore the realities of aid and domestic accountability. ODI contributed a case study on Uganda, which looks at aid and accountability in the health sector and around the budget process.
