Sudan’s deteriorating lifeline: strategies to support livestock production and trade

Livestock is one of Darfur’s main economic assets, making a major contribution to Sudan’s national livestock and meat exports. During ten years of conflict, Darfur's livestock trade has been badly affected. Contracting volumes of livestock brought to market and a loss of competitiveness as trading costs soar, has left the regional and national economy struggling as well as many Sudanese people who make a living in the sector.

Monitoring protection: asking the impossible?

In today's armed conflicts, civilians bear the brunt of hostilities. Humanitarian agencies strive to improve the protection afforded to civilians, but how can they better monitor and evaluate protection programming to ensure that they best serve those in need? This event, co-hosted by the Humanitarian Policy Group and the International Committee of the Red Cross aims to understand the challenges of monitoring protecting work, and promote discussion on ways forward.

Humanitarian Standards Forum

The Humanitarian Standards Forum sought to present an agreed framework for action and outline how agencies can engage in implementation. The event also addressed issues of certification. Wendy Fenton spoke on a panel and moderated the discussion on the second day.

Learning from the city: humanitarian action in urban areas

With rapid urbanisation taking place on a global scale, urban areas are increasingly affected by humanitarian emergencies. Amid the growing recognition of the need to address the operational implications of urban risk and vulnerability in the humanitarian sector, this event will launch the British Red Cross’ recent study on humanitarian action in urban areas: Learning from the city.
