| Profile: |
Established
in 2000, and based in Cambridge (UK), the UNEP World Conservation
Monitoring Centre provides information for policy and action
to conserve the living world. It was founded jointly by IUCN,
WWF and UNEP. WCMC's work is an integral part of the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), headquartered in Nairobi,
Kenya. Its programmes concentrate on species, forests, protected
areas, marine and fresh waters, plus habitats affected by climate
change, such as the polar regions. |
| Approach: |
WCMC
has a Capacity Building and Training Programme, which aims to
guide individuals and organisations through all the steps to
be considered in developing multi-user information systems.
It does this through the provision of advice, supporting materials
for biodiversity management, and providing training services.
These services empower institutions and individuals to assess
their own information needs, set their own priorities and build
their own information systems. |
| Finance: |
Initial financial support provided by IUCN, WWF and UNEP (co-founders). |
