Glasgow, Scotland, 21st - 25th June 2006

The CIVICUS World Assembly is a forum for international civil society representatives to get together, exchange ideas, experiences and build strategies for a just world. This event held in Glasgow, Scotland, in June 2006 marked the first in a new, annual format for the CIVICUS World Assembly, with each three-year cycle of events to be held in the same city. This format offers exciting new opportunities for sustained, in-depth exploration of issues crucial to civil society, and iterative, shared learning from community and voluntary efforts from around the world and the local context. Key obstacles to tackling global poverty

Building on and continuing the success of past World Assembly events, the overall theme for 2006 World Assembly was 'Acting Together for a Just World'. This overall theme was explored through four sub-themes: Civic Justice, Economic Justice, Political Justice and Social Justice. Attendees at the opening plenary of the CIVICUS World Assembly regarded 'unaccountable leaders' as the key obstacle to tackling global poverty.

The RAPID team facilitated two workshops during the Assembly:

Enhancing CSO Influence on Development Policies
Poor people benefit when civil society is engaged in shaping policy, particularly when engagement is legitimate and well-informed. This participatory workshop, under the Political Justice theme, focused on how CSOs can maximize their chances of influencing policy towards meeting the needs of the poor. The workshop was coordinated by Julius Court - Overseas Development Institute (ODI), UK and Vanesa Weyrauch - Centre for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth (CIPPEC), Argentina.

Working Together for Accountable Government: CSOs and parliaments
By working together, CSOs and parliaments can deliver more accountable, more responsive and more effective government. This workshop enabled CSOs to share experiences and learn lessons about engaging with parliaments. This workshop was coordinated by Alan Hudson - Overseas Development Institute (ODI), UK and presenters were Alan, Jack Jones Zulu - Jubilee Zambia and Vanesa Weyrauch - Centre for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth (CIPPEC), Argentina.
